A land of adventure

Upon reaching the tiny airport of Khovd in West Mongolia, we were greeted by our local guide who took us for a last round of shopping for essentials before we headed deep into the mountains without much human encounter except only wild landscapes.

Our final destination is Potanin Glacier in Altai Tavan Bogd Mountains of West Mongolia. Our adventure began by riding a rugged Russian van and a 4 wheel drive through the bumpy off roads for the next 4 days. The 1st stop was lunch near a stream in the middle of nowhere off the highway, a not so perfect picnic spot with lots of sand fly. After 3 hours drive through the highway, we reached the final destination of the day in an open land near a stream not far away from Olgii town. Everyone helped in setting up the tent. It was the 1st of the supposedly 3 day camping in the wild with open toilet.

The next day, our wild bumpy adventure began. We drove for 6 hours into the endless off mountainous road with only mountains surrounding us. Our heads and bodies were automatically moved front and back, left and right, in alignment with the undulating and side to side movements on the gravel dusty off mountainous road. We finally reached our destination for the next 2 nights, a valley in an open grassland with magnificent surrounding scenery at 2200m above sea level. However, it was freezing cold at night that most of us were shivering all night long. Therefore, the next morning, we decided to stay in a nearby ger tent.

On 3rd day, our rugged Russian van took us all in a cramped space to our final destination, Potanin Glacier. It was the most epic ride going up the mountain until we reached 2700m in less than 2 hour ride. The road was the bumpiest with potholes and some muds as it was raining. The glacier was awesome. Unfortunately, it was still freezing cold despite daylight as it was raining. Hence, we did not manage to do a supposedly 16km walk near the glacier. Nevertheless, it was still a worthwhile journey bracing the coldness and rugged terrain to reach the spectacular landmark.

On our final day, the journey took us 6 hours back in the same endless bumpy route. We ended our trip with a visit to an eagle hunter's family, where we sampled their locally made cheesy products. Our final night ended in a local hotel in Olgii town.

Mini Island in Chao Phraya

Ko Kret is a tiny man made island in the middle of Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. It is located north of Bangkok, around 20km away.

There is mini weekend morning market for the local tourists. I rented a bicycle to cycle around the tiny island on the walkway above the ground.

It was an excursion to have a glimpse of how the locals live on a tiny island in the middle of the grand river. It felt familiar to see houses built on stilt on a fishing village. There are temples and pottery factory in the island too. Cycling along the narrow lanes in the island was relaxing as there were greeneries around.

To reach the island, we took a ferry in the Chao Phraya river, followed by a bus ride before another boat ride across the river. The journey from downtown Bangkok took around 1.5-2 hours.

PEACEFUL SUNSET ON NO MAN’s BEACH

Sablayan is a small town in Mindoro Island, just south of Luzon Island, Philippines. It is hard to reach by land from Manila, requiring bus ride followed by boat and bus ride again. Another option is by flight, followed by a bus ride. I tried both options to and fro. My initial plan was to hike Mt Iglit, however little did I expect the national park was closed for conservation. Hence, I was stuck in the town for few days before my next flight. As the saying goes, there is always a blessing in disguise.

Sunset view of the resort

I stayed in a basic relaxing beach resort made of palm hut, on an endless black sand beach. It is about 30 mins walk from the town. The most amazing thing was enjoying the sunset in the sea, right in front of the resort with hardly anyone loitering in the beach. Seeing the sun slowly went down the sea with glowing red sky afterward was the most precious moment of the holiday.

Apart from the sunset, another way to spend the time in the town is to take a day boat ride to Pandan Island nearby. It is a private island with beautiful palm tree shades on the beach. I also did explore the island by trekking around 30 mins across the mini slope jungle to the other side with secluded beach. One has to hire a private boat, hence, it would be wise to share with other fellow travelers for 800 peso per return boat. As it is a private island, an entrance fee of 350 peso was imposed.

I spent the other 2 days exploring the small town, looking for local food in the market and street stalls. I also walked to a nearby fishing village whereby the locals were busy with their daily life of fishing, drying the fish and boat making. There is also a public park on a mini hill called Parola Park.

Overall, a supposedly trekking trip ended with a relaxing excursion and I did not regret visiting Sablayan.
