Snow trekking to Gosaikunda Lake

After a 5 day trek to Langtang as the first leg of 10 day Langtang Gosaikunda trek, it was time to explore the other so near yet so far part of the Himalayan region in north Nepal.

As we left Lama Hotel, it was all the way down for the 1st half of the day. After about 4 hours of downhill trekking, we reached our lunch pit stop. From the wonderful view of our resting place, we could see some tiny houses perching on top of a mountain on the other side of the valley. Our guide told us that was the destination for the night. OMG, how are we going up there?

After lunch, it was along combination of gradual ascend and descend before final ascend to the village called Thulo Shyafru. The trail started to feel different than those previous days as it was more scrubby. The hostel on day 6 of entire 10 day trek was the most luxurious stay of our entire trek, with proper bathroom and hot water, just like a hotel.

On day 7, the trail became more and more jungle with tall trees. It was all the way up followed by a flatter trail after lunch. We finally reached Sing Gompa village, where we had one of the most luxurious dinners with curry chicken.

Day 8 trek was walking nature path with cooling and shady trees. After lunch, the trail was more exposed. Finally, we reached our last hostel by lunch time, hence we had entire afternoon to rest by sitting around the fire. It was so cold as it snowed by evening.

Snowy day

Snow white

On day 9, the chilling snowy scene with snow fall prepared us for our final ascend to Lake Gosaikunda. We were walking on white ice. The weather was too cold that the lake was clouded with mist. Upon reaching the Lake Gosaikunda at 3980m, we were almost frozen. The lake was magnificent with surrounding misty white scenery.

After lunch, the blizzard started, hence we had to trek in heavy snow with slippery ground as some of the ice started to melt. We were glad that finally, we reached back the hotel in Sing Gompa after 2.5 hour trek.

On final day, it was a steep descend on another route that it only took less than 5 hours to reach Dhunche, the town where we felt we were back to civilisation.
